Our Figurative Language Short Story Unit
When one school year comes to a close, another one is about to open. I always like to end my school year having fully planned and prepped my first unit when I come back. That first unit is always a short story unit.
Why?
With rotating rosters and little to no data on my new students’ learning levels, I start “at the beginning.” I focus on plot, theme, characterization, etc., and my summative assessment is a nonfiction narrative prompt, so I can learn about my kids’ stories.
Also, short stories are an easy way for me to diversify whose voices are amplified in my classroom and to set the tone for important inclusivity conversations.
This is one reason why I love our latest figurative language short story analysis bundle.
The bundle pairs 8 diverse short stories with a figurative language element. Students complete a short yet engaging bell ringer where they are introduced to the element, they read the short story, and then they engage in a scaffolded analysis.
Each short story also includes 4 optional short-answer questions: a text-to-text, text-to-world, text-to-self, and a creative prompt. Each lesson is approximately 50 minutes, standards-aligned, and complete with extension ideas too!
Check out the 8 short story titles below to get a better idea for how awesome this bundle is:
