This webquest and presentation are a great way to start any unit on William Shakespeare’s plays or poetry. Students will watch videos and complete various activities to understand Shakespeare’s contributions to English, his vocabulary, the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and key grammatical points.

The Webquest has students watch two videos: “Shakespeare’s English” (3 min) and “Hip-Hop and Shakespeare” by Akala (up to the 8′ mark). These are accessible on YouTube. Then, they complete comprehension questions, a glossary, an iambic pentameter activity, and a translation exercise.
The presentation goes more in-depth on various grammatical points (the use of pronouns, the formation of verbs, and key prepositions) and provides students with interactive practice exercises.
You can move through these activities as a class, set them up as stations, or have students complete them independently or in small groups. This resource includes suggestions for managing these choices.
