I am so excited to participate in the TpT Seller Challenge hosted by Third in Hollywood, Teach Create Motivate, Sparkling in Second, and Poppy Zesty Teacherista! Do you want to participate? Check out this blog post for more information! This week’s challenge is to makeover an old product. I decided to revamp a best-selling product of mine, Integrating Sources with Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”.
This product guides students through a step-by-step ICE quote analysis. Students have to Introduce their quote, Cite it, and then Explain it. Basically, they are working on contextualizing quotes. The target quotes come from the short story “The Lottery.”
Whereas I liked this product okay, I had a few things I didn’t like about it. First of all, the product was only one page. Even though I felt that this worksheet helped explain a valuable writing skill, I could understand feedback like “I wish there was a second practice page”. So, that led me to my makeover…
I left the original scaffolded practice intact, but I added a second page of quotes for students. I also added a page with “Ready Rubrics” as a quiz version. I use these a lot on my short answer tests. In the margin by each quote, you’ll find a rubric with points assigned to each practice component – 1 point for the Introduction, 2 points for the Citation, and 2 points for the Explanation. This makes grading very easy and transparent for the students.
Lastly, I added suggested analysis topics for all of the quotes as well as a Teacher’s Guide explaining how to use the rubrics.
You can find this product and its sister-product, “Integrating Quotes with Romeo and Juliet”, at my TpT store.
See you next week for the second round of the TpT Seller Challenge!
